February 19, 2011. Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire knocked out Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel at 2:25 of Round Two to win both the WBC and the WBO Bantamweight Championships at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
This was Donaire’s 18th KO win and 25th consecutive win, improving his win-loss record to 26-1. His Mexican opponent, on the other hand, suffered his first loss in the boxing ring since 2006, falling to 44-3.
With this victory, Donaire became the second Filipino (after Manny Pacquiao) and third Asian (after Pacquiao and Japan’s Koki Kameda) to win world titles in three different weight divisions (in Donaire’s case: Super Flyweight, Flyweight, and Bantamweight).
