August 24, 2012. After a month of Judicial and Bar Council screenings and among eight shortlisted candidates, Pres. Benigno Aquino III selected Supreme Court Associate Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno to succeed Renato Corona as Chief Justice. She took her oath the following day.
Sereno is the first-ever female Chief Justice of the highest court in the Philippines, and the second youngest (after Manuel Moran), at age 52. She will have an 18-year term, serving under P-Noy and three other Presidents until 2030.
