August 18, 2012. A day before the 134th birth anniversary of former Pres. Manuel L. Quezon, a Piper Seneca plane with DILG Sec. Jesus “Jesse” Robredo on board crashed in Masbate Sea. Robredo and the plane’s two pilots were dead, while Robredo aide Jun Paolo Abrazado was found and rescued by fishermen. Three days later, a volunteer diver found Robredo’s body 180 feet below sea level.
Pilot error was the main cause of the plane crash, according to a three-month investigation.
On August 28, his remains were interred in Naga City, Camarines Sur, where he served as mayor from 2001 to 2010; he was also posthumously conferred the Philippine Legion of Honor award, with the rank of Chief Commander.
On November 26, 100 days after his death, the Quezon Service Cross was posthumously bestowed to Robredo. He was the fifth person to receive the highest national award.
