October 15, 2012. Finally, peace was brokered in Mindanao. The Philippine government and the MILF, a militant secessionist force in Mindanao, signed a framework agreement that would replace the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) with a new autonomous, parliamentary Bangsamoro territory. The new deal, a compromise made possible by more serious peace talks between the two camps, signals the end of decades-long civil war in Mindanao.
The signing ceremonies was attended, among others, by Pres. Benigno Aquino III, MILF Chairman Murad Ebrahim, chief negotiator Marvic Leonen, and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. Malaysia served as a third-party observer and mediator for the two camps.
