October 21, 2012. In Vatican City, Pope Benedict XVI canonized 17th-century teen martyr Pedro Calungsod, making him the Philippines’ second saint. He was formally beatified in 2000 by Pope John Paul II, twenty years after the motion to his beatification was initiated in the 1980s.
San Pedro Calungsod joins San Lorenzo Ruiz, canonized in 1987, as the only two Filipino saints declared by the Roman Catholic Church. The Feast of San Pedro Calungsod happens every April 2nd.
